CULTURE SHARE: Minwha Exhibit @ Kate Oh Gallery

Special traditional dance performance by Song Hee Lee and folk song by Junghi Kim

Korean traditional clothing experience provided by The Hanbok

Minwha painting has a history that can be traced as far back as the Josen Dynasty (1392-1910 A.D.). Minwha painting reflects the daily lives, custom, styles, and spirits of people regardless of culture or nationality. It is unexpectedly modern in its freedom and self-consciousness. The variety of expressions in portraying thought, wishes, and emotions, in Minwha is very much in line with the agenda of contemporary art that we see today.

Minwha works typicaaly include flowers and birds symbolizing family harmony, peonies for wealth and honor, sholar’s bookshelves and stationary for enlightenment and wisdom, and fruits and vegetables for fertility and blessing. The diverse range of content in Minhwa is evident in this exhibition.

The Korean folk painting class at Rutgers University held an exhibition at Kate Oh Gallery from May 2nd - May 7th, 2023. This exhibit featured work from 21 students as well as 10 famous folk painters invited by Su Young Lim. vice president of the International Exchange Team of the Korean Folk Painting Association. These artists presented along with 4 New York local Minwha artists. A total of 35 talented artists were featured in this vibrant show.

This exhibition served as an opportunity to experience Korean culture and to introduce Korean folk paintings to the public.
