Love As Transcendence
Love is usually experienced not as a loss but a self-fulfilling liberation because the appeal of the beloved releases a new enactment of our power to love.
We transcend ourselves, and this fulfilling expansion opens up new possibilities for further fulfillment...
When we freely love, we also experience liberation because we let the beloved's real and ideal goodness displace our egocentricity or everyday world.
Our fascination with our own goodness is broken;
our fearful preoccupation with self-protection is overcome;
our fixation with some particular object is loosened.
In a word, we are freed from our narrowness.
That is, we freely consent to allowing our self to be partially defined by the beloved and its needs or fulfillments.
Part of the way we define our lives becomes what the beloved is and requires.
